Internet surfing and instant messaging are common activities for kids. Theyre fairly safe, provided they know the rules of the road on the information superhighway. Dr. Edward Hill gives some tips on internet safety in todays 60 Second Housecall.
The internet has drastically changed the way that children interact with the world and can be a wonderful resource. But that access can also pose hazards. Thats why its important to be aware of what your children see and hear on the internet and what they share about themselves online.
There are online tools that you can use to control your childs internet access. You should be aware of your childs computer activity and educate your child about the online risks.
Here are some steps you can take to help your child stay safe online:
Become computer literate and learn how to block objectionable material.
Share an email account with your child so you can monitor messages.
Bookmark your childs favorite sites for easy access.
Warn your child about the potential dangers of private chat rooms.
Tell your child not to give out personal information without your permission, and
Take your child seriously if he or she reports an uncomfortable online exchange.
Know what your children are doing online.
