Affordable Prescription DrugsMonday, October 28, 2013
Prescription medications can be very expensive, especially if you are taking multiple medications for chronic medical problems. Dr. Edward Hill explains more about what you can if you have trouble paying for your medications.
If you have private insurance, you may have a prescription drug plan. These plans often categorize medications into different tiers of co-payment for certain drugs.
If you are covered by Medicare, you should have one of several prescription plans. Medicaid has its own pharmacy plan and rules for the type and number of medications you can receive each month.
Be sure you and your physician know what medications are covered in your pharmacy plan. Your physician may be able to prescribe a medication in the least expensive tier for you. Bring the contact phone number or website for your prescription plan to your doctors appointment.
Many drug companies offer patient assistance programs for people who meet income requirements. Your physician will need to complete an application for these free or discounted medications.
It is important to know what your medication will cost before you leave the doctors office. Always tell the doctor if you are not able to afford your medications.
