Back Pain and Safe Lifting TechniquesThursday, July 07, 2011
Improper lifting techniques can damage your back. Dr. Edward Hill tells us how improper lifting can cause low back pain and explains the proper technique for lifting in todays 60 Second Housecall.
When lifting, be sure to use proper body mechanics to protect your back. Keep your back straight, squat down, with one foot slightly in front of the other. Pick up object, bring it close to your body and lift using your legs, not your back. Keep the object close to your body while carrying it the farther you hold an object from your body, the more strain there is on your back. Do not twist your trunk while lifting instead take the time to step around or pivot your feet to protect your back.
Some examples of improper lifting include: bending at the waist instead of using your leg muscles while lifting something from the floor; holding an object away from your body while lifting or carrying it; twisting your back while lifting or moving a load; and the cardinal sin of bending at the waist while twisting and lifting.
So remember, be safe, use good body mechanics and proper lifting techniques to protect your back.
