When you wake up, do you ever feel like you have been run over by a Mack truck? Today, Dr. Edward Hill tells us how the correct pillow height can affect your sleep and spinal alignment.
Did you know that improper posture while sleeping can cause you to have neck and/or back pain?
The correct height pillow can help you maintain proper alignment of your spine. If you are a side sleeper, too many or too few pillows under your head can throw your neck out of alignment. The proper pillow height will have your head/neck in a neutral position, maintaining proper spinal alignment and protecting your neck and upper back.
To protect your lower back while sleeping on your side, place a pillow between your knees. The height of the pillow should be enough to bring the knee of your top leg level with your hip.
If sleeping on your back, you should have a flatter pillow under your head so that it is not pushing your head and neck forward.
Making simple changes in the type pillow you use and the height of that pillow can help to eliminate some back pain and protect the integrity of your spine as you sleep.
