In todays 60 Second Housecall, Dr. Edward Hill continues his look at back pain, discussing some protective and preventive measures you can use at home to ensure back stability and prevent further damage:
Posture is an important component of good back health. When standing erect, you should be able to draw a straight line from the ears, shoulders, hips and ankles. Avoid slumped posture, rounded shoulders and a forward head. The same applies for sitting posture avoid slouched posture.
When carrying groceries, be sure to even the load, carrying equal weight on each side so as not to cause a muscle strain or imbalance on one side.
When performing tasks while sitting or standing, it is better to change positions and shift weight frequently.
If experiencing back pain, protect your back when getting in and out of bed. To get out of bed, perform what is called a log roll roll to your side making sure the hips and shoulders move together as one unit do not twist your back. This helps to maintain the integrity of your spine. Use your arms to push your trunk upward as your feet are coming off the bed.
