Audible burping is considered impolite but it is the result of a natural bodily process. Dr. Edward Hill explains more about gas and bloating in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

Gas, burping and bloating are all normal conditions. Gas is made in the stomach and intestines as your body breaks down food into energy. Bloating, which is a feeling of fullness in the abdomen, can make you uncomfortable. Changing what you eat and drink can reduce gas and relieve discomfort.

Belching or burping is the voluntary or involuntary release of air from the stomach through the mouth. Burping three to four times after eating a meal is normal and is usually caused by swallowing air.

All people expel gas, but some people produce more gas than others. Common causes of gas and bloating include:

Swallowed air.

Foods and beverages.

Constipation.

Prescription and nonprescription medicines, as well as dietary supplements.

A medical condition, such as a bowel obstruction or Crohns disease, and

Changes in hormone levels.

Babies and young children may swallow large amounts of air without realizing it. This is why babies are burped shortly after feedingto expel the excess air that was swallowed during feeding.
