Caffeine is considered to be the most widely used drug in the world. Dr. Edward Hill tells us how caffeine impacts our health in todays 60 Second Housecall.
Caffeine is a bitter substance found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, kola nuts and certain medicines. It has many effects on the bodys metabolism, including stimulating the central nervous system. This can make you more alert and give you a boost of energy.
For most people, the amount of caffeine in two to four cups of coffee a day is not harmful. However, too much caffeine can make you restless, anxious and irritable. It may also keep you from sleeping well and cause headaches, abnormal heart rhythms or other problems. If you stop using caffeine, you could get withdrawal symptoms.
Overuse of caffeine has been linked to insomnia, panic attacks, as well as mood swings. For those individuals who have heart problems, large amounts of caffeine can be dangerous.
Caffeine can be safely enjoyed in moderation by most people. Those who are pregnant, or trying to become pregnant should avoid caffeine as much as possible, as should anyone who has had a serious reaction from caffeine.
