Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect with millions of children affected. Dr. Edward Hill discusses child abuse and neglect in today’s 60 Second Housecall.
While three million reports of child abuse are made each year in the United States, experts estimate that the actual number of incidents of abuse and neglect is three times greater than reported.
Four children die each day as a result of child abuse, and three of the four are under 4 years of age.
Child abuse occurs at every socio-economic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.
Studies indicate that the perpetrators of child abuse were the parents in 80 percent of cases, other relatives in 7 percent and unmarried partners in 3 percent. The remaining 10 percent were people with other relationships to the child.
One-third of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the cycle of abuse.
Any suspected child abuse can be anonymously reported by calling the national hotline at 1-800-4–A-CHILD, or the Mississippi hotline at 1-800-222-8000. They can also help you if you feel stressed to the point that you are concerned you may harm your child.
For North Mississippi Medical Center, I’m Dr. Edward Hill.
