Common Cold 2

Tuesday, December 31, 2013

Having a cold can make you miserable. You are not sick enough to stay home, but you feel miserable. What are some treatments that will make you feel better? Dr. Edward Hill provides some advice for relief in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

A cold is caused by a virus that is easily transmitted through respiratory secretions when someone coughs or sneezes or by touching a surface that is contaminated with the virus and then touching your face.

Unfortunately there is no cure for a cold. Your body will heal you over time. There are some things you can do that may make you feel better. They include:

Stay home if you have a fever. This allows you to rest and prevents spreading the cold to co-workers.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

Dont smoke or expose yourself to second-hand smoke. This delays healing and irritates your mucous membranes.

Use saline nose drops and gargle with warm salt water to relieve nasal stuffiness or sore throat.

Acetaminophen may help with the aches and fever

Over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants may offer some relief from the nasal congestion. You may have side effects such as drowsiness, confusion or inability to urinate from these medications.
