Thursday, April 14, 2016

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that about 19 million American adults suffer from clinical depression. Depression not only affects a persons mental health, but it can also carry with it physical symptoms. Dr. Edward Hill discusses these in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

Most of us know about the emotional symptoms of depression. But you may not know that depression can cause physical symptoms, too. In fact, many people with depression feel pain or other physical symptoms. These include:

Headaches. These are fairly common in people with depression.

Back pain.

Muscle aches and joint pain. Depression can make any kind of chronic pain worse.

Chest pain.

Digestive problems.

Exhaustion and fatigue. No matter how much you sleep, you may still feel tired or worn out.

Sleeping problems. Many people with depression cant sleep well anymore. They wake up too early or cant fall asleep when they go to bed. Others sleep more than normal.

Change in appetite or weight, and

Dizziness or lightheadedness.

In some cases, treating your depressionwith therapy or medicine or bothwill resolve your physical symptoms. But make sure to tell your health care provider about any physical symptoms. Dont assume theyll go away on their own.
