Exercise Program

Monday, January 20, 2014

The new year is a great time to begin an exercise program and get in shape. Dr. Edward Hill is here to tell us how in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

Many people look to begin exercising at the start of a new year. Its easy to say that youll exercise every day, but youll need a plan. Before beginning a new exercise program, you should consult with your physician.

Ask about special precautions you might need to take. You may need a checkup or other evaluation to determine how healthy your heart is before you start.

Slow and easy is the way to begin. Depending on the type of exercise your doctor recommends, start with five to 10 minutes of exercise a day. Every week, as you get stronger, gradually increase your time and frequency. Your ultimate goal is 30 to 60 minutes on most days of the week.

To help you stick with your exercise program, it may help to plan out a month of workouts at a time. Schedule exercise as one of your top priorities. Note how long your workouts will be and what kind of exercise you will do. Get 2014 started right.
