Children develop habits early in their lives. And parents can often be the examples they look to in developing their lifestyle habits. Dr. Edward Hill discusses healthy habits in children in todays 60 Second Housecall.
Children learn by example. What parents do has a greater impact on children then what they say. By modeling healthy behaviors now, our children will likely be healthier adults.
Start early in your childs life by establishing healthy meal times and eating around the family dinner table together. Try new foods every week. Pack fruits and vegetables for quick snacks on the go. Find time each week to engage your children in physical activities. Let them see you exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. Save television, movies and computer games for after physical activities.
It might take a while to change unhealthy habits, but we will only have healthy children if we create a healthy environment for them. Encourage them to try new and different things. Experimenting with new foods, participating in a fun run and going to bed a bit earlier might be met with opposition at first, but establishing a healthy lifestyle now will make for happier, healthier children in the long run.
