A persons lungs do a lot of work and are vital to our well-being. Smoking in particular can take a toll on our lungs and should be avoided. Dr. Edward Hill talks about healthy lungs in todays 60 Second Housecall.
The average adult takes more than 20,000 breaths a day. Your respiratory system, which includes the nose, throat, windpipe and lungs, brings air into the body when you breathe.
In the lungs, the oxygen from each breath is transferred to the bloodstream and sent to all the bodys cells as life-sustaining fuel. Keeping your lungs healthy is an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle.
Oxygen is important to all the cells in our body. Our lungs are vital to delivering oxygen and removing waste. We can take good care of our lungs by exercising and choosing not to smoke.
By smoking, we bring thousands of chemicals into our bodies that are harmful in many ways. In our lungs, the chemicals cause discoloration, restricted airways and other problems, particularly cancer. One of the chemicals in cigarettes is nicotine and can be highly addictive. Smoking is a very harmful activity to our lungs and our bodies and can be a very difficult habit to break once someone starts.
