Dont think that herbal health products are safe just because they come from plants. Even some plants are poisonous. Dr. Edward Hill tells us more about herbal health products in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

Although herbal products are advertised as natural, they arent natural to the human body.

Unlike prescription medicines, herbal products dont have to be tested to prove that they work well and are safe before theyre sold. In addition, herbal products may have other things in them, like plant pollen, that could make you sick.

It may not be safe to take herbal medicines if you have certain health problems. These include high blood pressure, heart disease and blood clotting problems.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you get a health problem while youre taking an herbal product and follow these guidelines:

Dont take Ginkgo biloba if youre taking aspirin, ticlopidine, clopidogrel or dipyridamole.

Dont take St. Johns wort if youre taking an antidepressant.

Dont take ephedra if youre taking a decongestant or a stimulant drug.

Dont take kava products if youre taking a benzodiazepine, a barbiturate, an antipsychotic medicine or any medicine used to treat Parkinsons disease. Also, dont drink alcohol if you take kava products.
