If you are like most of us, when you read a food label or ingredient list, you might find some words youve never even heard ofthey might even be hard to pronounce.
Understanding what is in our food is important. For example, sugars can have different names that sound confusing. Just because a food, drink, or snack is labeled sugar-free doesnt mean there is no sweetener in it. Ingredients like corn syrup, maltodextrin, sucralose, fructose and sorbitol are still types of sugar. From drinks like sports drinks to spaghetti sauce to gum, sugars are hidden in many types of foods. Pick up a food out of your pantry and read the label, you might be surprised to find some hidden sugars.
Look for foods that are truly sugar free or where sugar is lower on the ingredient list. Try to avoid foods that have several sugars. Eating a diet lower in sugar will help maintain a healthy weight and avoid certain health related problems like diabetes and obesity.
