Holiday Eating for DiabeticsFriday, November 16, 2012
Holiday eating can be hard for someone who has diabetes. Dr. Edward Hill gives some healthy eating tips for diabetics faced with holiday food temptations in todays 60 Second Housecall.
The holiday season is usually full of parties and food temptation. If you have diabetes, you need to be extra careful of what you eat. Practice moderation by sampling the foods you like without going overboard.
Follow these tips when you go to parties:
Plan ahead. Call ahead of time and ask what will be served. Think about what you want to eat and how the choices fit into your meal plan.
Eat something before you go. Have a light snack so you wont be as tempted to overeat.
Keep your perspective. Dont be too hard on yourself if you dont meet your healthy eating goals at one meal. Simply adjust your eating habits at the next meal.
Control portions. Try selecting one serving of a few items that are low in fat, sugar and salt.
Increase activity. Increase your exercise and burn more calories.
Healthy holiday eating may help you avoid that New Years resolution to lose weight.
