Insomnia 2

Friday, September 28, 2012

Insomnia is a common problem that takes a toll on your energy, mood, health and ability to function during the day. Dr. Edward Hill discusses some ways of dealing with insomnia and getting a good nights sleep in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

If an illness or medicine is keeping you from sleeping, treating the illness or changing the medicine may help.

Other things that may help you get a good nights sleep include:

Follow a bedtime routine. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.

Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and at a comfortable temperature.

Exercise regularly. It helps you go to sleep and also to have deeper sleep.

Drink less caffeine.

Avoid alcohol, especially late in the evening.

Avoid smoking.

Eat regular meals and do not go to bed hungry.

Do not try to fall asleep. This only makes the problem worse. If you cant sleep, leave the bedroom and do something different, such as reading. Dont do things that could keep you awake, such as watching TV, drinking coffee, eating or worrying. Go back to bed only when you are sleepy.

Your doctor may prescribe sleeping pills for a few days or weeks, only until you have a regular sleep routine.
