Dr. Hill:
Healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in your quality of life. Having healthy sleep habits is often referred to as having good sleep hygiene.
The following tips can help you develop better sleep habits:
Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day
Lie down to sleep only when sleepy
If you cant sleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed and go to another room; return when you are tired
Dont do things in bed that might keep you awake, like watching television, reading, talking on the phone, or worrying
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol for at least four to six hours before bedtime
Avoid strenuous exercise within four hours of bedtime
Avoid daytime napping
Relax before going to bed
Avoid eating large meals or drinking a lot of water or other liquids in the evening
Keep the bedroom a comfortable temperature
Use earplugs if noise is a problem, and
Expose yourself to daytime light for at least 30 minutes each morning
