Low Testosterone 1

Monday, January 13, 2014

Experiencing low sex drive or hair loss? You may be suffering from low testosterone, or Low T. Dr. Edward Hill discusses testosterone and its role in a males body in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

Testosterone is a male hormone, or androgen, made by the body. It is responsible for most male sexual characteristics. Most of the testosterone in a mans body is produced in the testes.

Testosterone helps:

Maintain reproductive tissues

Stimulate sperm production

Stimulate and maintain sexual function

Increase muscle mass and strength, and

Maintain bone strength

Just like your cholesterol or blood pressure, there is a numerical range of testosterone levels that are considered normal. The brain and the testicles work together to keep testosterone within this range.

When levels of testosterone are below normal, the brain signals the testicles to make more. When testosterone levels reach a normal level, the brain signals the testicles to make less.

Like women, men experience a decrease in sex hormone levels as they age. This is a normal process, sometimes called male menopause or androgen deficiency in the aging male, or ADAM.

Men with certain chronic conditions are more likely to have low testosterone.
