Meningitis Signs and Symptoms

People often confuse the early signs and symptoms of meningitis with the flu. In fact, meningitis may come on the heels of a flu-like illness or infection. Dr. Edward Hill describes some of the signs and symptoms of meningitis in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Its not easy to spot the symptoms of meningitis. Thats why its important to stay alert, learn the hallmark signs and symptoms, and act quickly. It may help save your or your childs life. Bacterial meningitis symptoms may develop within hours.

Early meningitis symptoms may mimic the flu. Fever, headache and neck stiffness are the hallmark symptoms of meningitis. Other symptoms include:

Nausea and vomiting, sometimes along with diarrhea

Confusion and disorientation

Drowsiness

Eye pain or sensitivity to bright light, and

Muscle or joint pain or weakness

Other possible signs and symptoms of meningitis include:

Abnormal skin color

Stomach cramps

Ice-cold hands and feet

Reddish or brownish skin rash, or purple spots

Numbness and tingling, and

Seizures

Bacterial meningitis is serious and can be fatal within days without prompt antibiotic treatment. Seek medical care right away if you or a loved one experiences symptoms of meningitis or if the symptoms are very severe or appear suddenly.
