Physical Activity

Getting more physically active is a common goal for people at this time of year but it can be a difficult one to achieve. Dr. Edward Hill gives some tips on how to make your physical activity fun in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

You dont always need high-intensity exercise to improve fitness and decrease health risks. Increasing your amount of moderate physical activity, such as walking or doing yard work, has clear health benefits.

Start with simple, everyday activities that are fun and easy for you to do. Walking 10 minutes a day is a good place to start for most people. Slowly increase how often and how long you do an activity. Dont overdo it when you start out.

Make regular changes to your activitiesfor example, you might change walking paths now and then, change your weight-training program every month or take a dance class for a while. Listen to music or watch TV while you exercise. Find a partner to work out with or join a group activity. Ask family members to plan an activity for the weekend.

Everyone slips off their plan now and then. Find out what triggered your slip and make a plan to avoid it the next time.
