Snoring 2Tuesday, January 03, 2012
Snoring is very common and can be an annoying condition. If you are tired of your spouses snoring, Dr. Edward Hill has some tips that may help in todays 60 Second Housecall.
While snoring is usually not a serious problem, it can affect your sleep, leaving you tired and sleepy throughout the day. If you are a snorer here are some tips that might help you get a good nights rest.
Consider losing some weight. Most snorers tend to be overweight, and shedding excess weight has been shown to substantially decrease snoring.
Avoid midnight snacks and alcoholic beverages. Drinking alcohol or eating heavily before going to sleep causes throat muscles to relax.
Avoid sleeping pills or other sedatives. Although they put you to sleep, they relax your neck muscles, making your snoring worse.
If you smoke, stop. Smoking causes nasal and lung congestion, a major cause of snoring.
Sleep on your side: While heavy snorers will snore in any position, moderate snorers tend to snore only when sleeping on their backs.
Sleep without a pillow: By putting a kink in your neck, pillows can contribute to airway obstruction.
