Some stroke risk factors are hereditary. Others are a function of natural processes. Still others result from a persons lifestyle. You cant change factors related to heredity or natural processes, but those resulting from lifestyle or environment can be modified. Stroke is the third-leading cause of death among Americans. There are certain known risk factors for stroke. Some can be modified, others you cannot change.
The risk factors that cannot be changed include age, gender, race and family history of stroke.
These are some of the risk factors you can change in your favor.
Have your blood pressure checked frequently. According to the National Stroke Association, controlling your blood pressure can decrease your risk of a stroke by 40 percent or more.
Stop smoking. It doubles your risk of stroke.
Maintain a healthy weight.
Keep your diabetes under control. Having diabetes doubles a persons risk for stroke because of circulation problems associated with the disease.
Lower your cholesterol level. High amounts of cholesterol can cause blockage of the arteries to the brain.
Stroke is devastating and deadly. If you are already at high risk for stroke, reduce your odds by working on these modifiable risk factors.
