Sun DamageWednesday, June 05, 2013
UV radiation from sun exposure causes changes in many vital skin structures. Despite warnings, most people still dont take the sun seriously. Dr. Edward Hill discusses how the suns rays can damage skin in todays 60 Second Housecall.
Many people love to be outside in the summertime. But our love affair isnt necessarily a two-way street: Exposure to sun causes wrinkles and age spots on our faces and is the number one cause of skin cancer.
Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the suns ultraviolet light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers breakdown, the skin begins to sag, stretch and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching. The skin also bruises and tears more easily -- taking longer to heal.
Exposure to the sun causes:
Pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions
Fine and coarse wrinkles
Discolored areas of the skin, and
Dilation of small blood vessels under the skin
Sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when youre young, but it will definitely show later in life.
