Tips for Restful Sleep

Thursday, June 05, 2014

Nothing is more refreshing than a restful sleep. On the other hand, nothing is more frustrating than being unable to sleep. In todays 60 second housecall, Dr. Edward Hill shares some simple tips.

Dr. Hill:

Are you having a difficult time sleeping? Here is a list of simple tips that may help you to get a good nights rest:

Set a schedule. Go to bed at a set time each night and get up at the same time each morning.

Avoid stimulants. Limit caffeine, alcohol and nicotine, especially at night.

Exercise. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise during the day. This helps the body unwind. But avoid strenuous exercise just before bedtime.

Relax before bedtime. Take a hot bath, or read a book. This lets your mind and body unwind.

Sleep until daybreak. Waking up with the sun helps set our internal clock.

Dont lie in bed awake and fret. Walk and stretch, read a book, listen to music or say a prayer. This will relax your mind.

Control the bedroom temperature. If the temperature is too cold or too hot, it can interfere with your ability to sleep.

If these simple measures fail to work, see your health care provider.
