Using Medicines Wisely

Monday, November 01, 2010

There are real dangers in using medicine incorrectly or using medication not intended for you. The medicine could harm or kill you. In todays 60 Second Housecall, Dr. Edward Hill discusses medication safety.

Dr. Hill:

Medicine can save a persons life. They can also cure or control diseases. But if you use them the wrong way, they can be dangerous. Working together with your doctor can help you avoid problems.

Bring your medicine bottles to your doctors office. You can also carry a list of the medicines you are taking. Make sure to include herbal products and over-the-counter medicines.

Ask the doctor whether you take the medicine with or without food, and whether you can take it with other medicines.

At the pharmacy, read the label to make sure it is the right medicine and make sure you understand the instructions on the medicine before you leave the pharmacy.

If your medicine causes side effects you did not expect, or if you think you have an allergic reaction to it, call your doctor right away. If it is an emergency, call 9-1-1. Be sure to throw away old medicines, and do not share your medicines with other people.
