Weight lifting belts may help prevent lower back injuries and support a persons core muscles. Dr. Edward Hill explains more about the importance of these accessories in todays 60 Second Housecall.

Dr. Hill:

A weightlifting belt serves two main purposesto reduce the stress on the lower back and to increase intra-abdominal pressure to help stabilize the entire midsection when lifting. A properly fitted weightlifting belt can also improve technique.

Proper fit involves placing the widest part evenly across the small of your back with the buckle across your lower abdominals. When fastening the belt, it should fit tightly, but not to the point of pain or discomfort.

Weightlifting belts are not for every exercise. Belts are recommended for lifts such as the squat or dead lift. The belt should be removed between sets. Prolonged use of a weightlifting belt can decrease abdominal strength development. Lifters with heart disease and blood pressure problems should exercise caution when wearing a tight belt for prolonged periods of time.
